The genesis of this mini series was a happy accident. During what's supposed to be a break of my tenure as video editor in The Daily Pennsylvanian due to the summer holiday, I had learned that Tyler Ringhofer, a writer for the Sports section, would be attending the 2024 Paris Olympics. At the time, the University of Pennsylvania had two current students competing in the Games, Bella Whittaker of the 4x400 M relay in track & field, and Matt Fallon of the 200 breaststroke event in swimming. We've already collaborated with these two special athletes in previous video projects, so an idea sprang to mind.
Why not make a special series?
A few FaceTimes, a game plan, and some prayers later, DP in Paris, or #DParis2024, was born. While Tyler was on-site shooting with the athletes (with the help of his mother), I was coordinating with the skeleton summer design and social media team to create and promote this mini special series.
The result? The Daily Pennsylvanian, for the first time in the history of the paper, had on the ground Olympic coverage.
